Dear Ms. Wilson,
On April 24, 2008 I filed in Thurston County Superior Court a "COMPLAINT FOR DECLARATORY AND INJUNCTIVE RELIEF", requesting that OSPI and the SBE follow the Law.
Please immediately supply the information I am requesting below.
This is a public records request for information regarding the statewide math curriculum adoption process. I would like the following documents:
1. The applications for the Instructional Materials Review Team and the Professional Development Facilitators.
2. The rating criteria for the Instructional Materials Review Team members and the Professional Development Facilitators.
3. The score sheets for each of the Instructional Materials Review Team applicants and the Professional Development Facilitators applicants.
4. The final list of the Instructional Materials Review Team members and the Professional Development Facilitators.
5. A copy of the RFP/RFI/RFQ (I’m not sure what the process was) for the facilitator of the math curriculum adoption process (I understand Relevant Strategies is facilitating the process).
6. The responses/bids from all the math curriculum adoption facilitator bidders.
7. The contract between the successful math curriculum adoption facilitator bidder and OSPI for the facilitation of the math curriculum adoption including all accompanying documents—for example, deliverables if they are not included in the contract.
8. The cost of the services provided by the successful math curriculum adoption facilitator bidder if that amount is not included in the contract or accompanying documents.
In addition I am particularly interested in how the 22 Members of the Instructional Materials Review Criteria panel were selected. I would also like to know why the public was not informed prior to April 25, 2008 that these 22 individuals would meet on that date and produce draft #1 of the instructional materials review criteria document, which will be finalized in one more meeting and then this criteria will be used to select the math materials that will be recommended by the State.
I am particularly upset that despite claims of balance by OSPI, I find balance entirely absent on the IMR criteria panel. Of the 13 members of the IMR criteria panel that are associated with an individual school district it appears that all 13 of these districts use Connected Math at the middle school level.
There also appears to be a strong bias toward Core-Plus at the high school level.
Please give my request your highest priority, as it will be used in my legal action asking for injunctive relief, which seeks to have OSPI and the SBE follow the Laws of the State of Washington.
Sincerely,
Danaher M. Dempsey, Jr.

My Sig - Other has made an interesting comment about the many school / math meetings I've dragged her to -----------
ReplyDeletenote: she grew up in Boston, and a graduate of Boston Latin Academy, 1978, and did some high school things with the Boston School Board while in high school. Depending on your POV, she's lapsed Irish Catholic or recovering Irish Catholic. She's lived in Seattle now for 2 years ------
She says the nice / get along ethic out here is just a patina - that the meetings are really like a Catholic mass - the people up front know what is going to happen, they decide to tell you when you'll do what you'll do, and all the occupants of the pews do what they're told when they're told.
THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE REASON for the secrecy and behind the scenes shenanagans for bergeson's curriculum committee - she wants to make sure that her 10+ year math disaster rolls on. PERIOD.
Hey,
ReplyDeleteGet your Significant other down to Los Angeles. She needs a week at the LA Catholic Worker to discover the real church the one composed of all of us complete with many failings but actually organized in a strange anarchy to do God's work.
Write them and get a subscription to their Catholic Agitator. It is $1 per year.
Murph these folks are so lined up with your thinking. THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE REASON for you to be separated from this organization.
