Ruth Parker finds the NCTM Focal Points misguided ... she finds then off course because they emphasize the standard arithmetic algorithms for addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.

Dr. Parker states that standard algorithms harm mathematical understanding.

While most might be affected by an economic downturn, math reform keeps on going. Too bad it doesn't work.

Good teachers continue teaching standard algorithms - despite the false claims of math reform. So long as there is money for xeroxing, any bad textbook will work, no matter what the expense.

When the majority of students are failing school I am hopeful our government will finally listen to us.
